Discussion Week 30 - Friday November 20th

Movember and Beggars

In western countries its very common to see charity drives such as Movember(A cancer charity event in which men grow moustaches throughout November, and people can donate money depending on if they think the moustache looks good or not).

Also, there are charity running events such as running a marathon for leukaemia or shaving your head bald for cancer, and these events often bring in a lot of money for those charities, however, these kinds of events don't seem to happen in Japan. Why not? Do Japanese people even donate to charity?

Also, Kyoto doesn't seem to have many beggars asking for money(buskers are not beggars), compared to western countries where beggars are found on almost every street corner in the cities. Are beggars not accepted in Japan? Would Japanese people even give money to beggars if they met them?
