Discussion Week 46 - Friday the 24th and Sunday the 26th of March

 - Discussion Week 46 -

- Friday the 24th of March -

- Why do we try to keep people (especially loved ones) alive as long as possible?

I went to the hospital the other day, and I noticed there were a lot of old people.

That isn't a bad thing, and it is quite normal for old people to be in hospital.

Most of the old people there were still able to do things on their own eg. walk, talk, eat, etc.

However, there were a few that were no longer able to do anything by themselves. Some that were in wheelchairs or on beds and couldn't move by themselves anymore.

Perhaps it's only an opinion, but I think those who are bedridden, or unable to do anything are no longer able to live a life worth living, they cannot enjoy any normal part of life anymore even down to most simple or mundane parts of life.

Why do we try to keep these people alive as long as we can?

Are we just selfish?

Do you think that just because the person is unable to tell us, that they want to continue living in such a way?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 26th of March -
- Why do we make stupid people famous?

When I say stupid, I don't mean a person that is uneducated or unable to do anything.

But if we take a prime example as the "Kardashians" a family that are famous for reasons that are beyond me, or recently there has been a young girl in America who has become famous because her thug-like personality.

While there are scientists that are making strives in medical science, or archaeologists making amazing discoveries, but I'm sure you can name more people famous for being silly on TV or in a movie than you can famous scientists or people who have been fighting against terrorists etc.

Why do we make people famous that don't really deserve recognition?

Why don't we make enough people, that are important to all of humanity, famous?

If you don't know the kardashians, I recommend checking wikipedia, also the thug-like girl I mentioned earlier is known as the "how bow dah" girl if you want to check google for her.

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 45 - Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th of March

 - Discussion Week 45 -

- Friday the 17th of March -

- Immortality

Would you want to live forever?

What would you do if you could live forever?

Conditions for this discussion are as follows:

1. You cannot pass your immortality to anyone else.

2. You cannot kill yourself.

What are the pros and cons of living forever? Do you think you would be able to handle living forever?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 19th of March -
- Do you think humans would be able to outlast/survive an ice age?
People theorise that an ice age may have wiped out the dinosaurs. Also, that other ice ages may have occurred in Earth's history. In the past, as humans were developing from the stone age and further, maybe we wouldn't have had the technology required to survive. But these days we have the technology to keep ourselves alive in harsh environments.
Do you think we would be able to survive an ice age?
Think carefully! We as humans may have the knowledge and ability to survive, but we also rely on many other factors in the world to stay alive now (animals, plants, (BEES!)) that may be wiped out in an ice age.

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 44 - Friday the 10th and Sunday the 12th of March

 - Discussion Week 44 -

- Friday the 10th of March -

- If you were dropped into the past (roughly 200 years into the past) would you teach people about technology that you know about from the future, or would you just try to adapt to life without it and say nothing?

So imagine you woke up today and found that you were two hundred years in the past. After getting over the initial shock, what would you do?

As a lot of modern technology won't have been invented yet, will you teach people about modern technology?

Even if you think you don't know about any modern technology, there are certainly some things that you have learned in school, or over the years that people in the past won't know about.

The picture above will be printed out in a large format for you to read during the class.

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 12th of March -
- Marriage -

Is marriage even necessary anymore?

Has it ever been necessary?

According to certain texts from the Heian period, it was normal or possibly even expected for the elites to be adulterous.

What difference does marriage make to a relationship, is it stronger when bound by a law?

Or is a law to bind two people together a restriction rather than a strengthening bond?

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 43 - Friday the 3rd and Sunday the 5th of March

 - Discussion Week 43 -

- Friday the 3rd of March -

- If you were stranded on a desert island and could choose 3 items to bring with you, what would you bring?

This sounds like a pretty simple question, but!

There's a twist, I am going to give you the list of items when you come into class on Friday!

I have the list here ready, but I won't tell you what it is.

The only hint I'll give you is that of the items that will be available, you won't be getting something like a cellphone or a GPS device. It's not going to be easy.

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 5th of March -
- A.I. -

One of our students has asked for this topic!

So, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) is continuously being improved on and getting smarter and smarter. Slowly, A.I. is taking over humans in thinking capability for multiple different applications, recently (April 2015) an A.I. managed to beat one of the best human players at shogi.

Also, the student mentioned that they had watched a movie recently called "EX MACHINA" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYGzRB4Pnq8) in which humans create an A.I. that has to figure out the human concept of "love" in order to pass a kind of test.

It sounds kind of scary that it might be able to figure out such abstract concepts.

The point our student wants to make with this is that the reason Humans have been at the top of the food chain for so long is because of our intelligence.

Why do we continue to strive to make something that could overtake our ability and in doing so, take over us generally?

Should we continue A.I. development, or should we stop now before we are overtaken?

Does the prospect of A.I. taking over make you nervous about our future?

Let's talk about that.
