Discussion week 43 - Friday the 4th and Sunday the 7th of March

 - Discussion Week 43 -

- Friday the 4th of March

 - Drugs? Not even once -

In asia, traditional medicine (also known as alternative medicine) is very popular.

In Western culture, a type of alternative medicine called 'Homeopathy' is practiced by some people.

These forms of medicine are most commonly not based on any kind of scientific tests or proof, and may not have any positive effects other than a placebo effect.

Do you think these kinds of treatments are dangerous for people?

For example, if you were to treat a cancer patient with alternative medicine that had no real effect, that person would surely die of the cancer that is not being treated.

On top of all of that, many different kinds of alternative medicine require parts of rare and/or endangered animals, and this market helps to fuel the poachers that try to kill these animals.

Also, if you don't know about homeopathy, to explain it in short; it's the idea that you can treat illnesses by diluting a substance so far that there isn't even a single molecule of the active ingredient left, and calling it medicine.

Lets talk about that.

- Sunday the 7th of March

 - Why does the debate continue? -

Even now, there is still debate in Asia on two very delicate topics; Comfort Women, and The Nanking Massacre.

What is the general thought of Japanese people when it comes to these two topics?

Even as recently as 2014, a Japanese politician has said that the Nanking Massacre didn't happen. Also, recently the Japanese government decided to pay a very very large sum of money to the surviving comfort women.

Why are both of these topics still being debated?

Wouldn't it be better to finally settle the truth of both of these topics to the world, so everyone can get past these topics and move on to more important matters?

Who do you think should take responsibility for these events?

Lets talk about that?

〜 Mark's English Storytelling 〜

〜 Mark's English Storytelling 〜

#6

Hello everyone!

I am going to write English stories for you once per week with some interesting Vocabulary and Grammar, it's like a small lesson that you can try at home!

〜 〜 〜 〜 〜

I hope you enjoy this week's story! Please leave a comment if you have questions about any vocabulary or grammar!!

〜 〜 〜 〜 〜

- I am a bad cook.

While I was walking home, I was almost hit by someone riding their bicycle crazily on the sidewalk. I jumped quickly out of the way to avoid getting hit, and I almost dropped my new t-shirt. After walking for about 10 minutes, I noticed that the sky had started getting darker, and I started to get worried that I hadn't taken an umbrella with me.

It started raining lightly, so I started running home fast so I wouldn't get wet. Once I got home it started raining heavily, so I felt lucky that I made it to my house just in time. I put the new t-shirt in my laundry-basket so I could wash it later, and prepared to make dinner. I turned on my rice cooker and had to wait for the rice to cook slowly so I sat down at my desk and started to write in my diary.

I wrote about my scary encounter with the bicycle that I had on the way home, and I also wrote about the expensive t-shirt that was at the shop. The rain was still falling heavily so I decided to turn on my radio. I pressed the 'on' button on my remote control and all of a sudden the radio played music very loudly!!

I was shocked so I turned the volume down quickly and walked back to my kitchen. In the kitchen I noticed that the rice was almost done, so I started cooking some vegetables and some meat. I am not very good at cooking, and I burnt the food badly. It didn't taste very good after that.

After dinner, my phone started to ring annoyingly. It was my boss calling! I picked up the phone quickly and my boss started yelling loudly. "Why didn't you come to work today?!!" yelled my boss, I had to reply quickly....

Discussion week 42 - Friday the 26th and Sunday the 28th of February

 - Discussion Week 42 -

- Friday the 26th of February

 - Japan is just getting older and older -

Japan's population is ageing. 25% - 30% of the population of Japan is over 65 years old. Japans population has not been increasing.  Japan has around 60,000 centenarians, and of those 60,000, around 52,000 of them are women.

Why do you think there aren't many children being born, does this link back to last weeks discussion of the phenomena of parasite singles/herbivore men?

What is a viable solution to the decreasing population?

Also, we talked about this before, but are the older people in Japan getting the right care they need?

And does the fact that there are so many old people needing care, that their family members are spending more time caring for their elders relatives, rather than making a family of their own?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 28th of February

 - Think of the children! -

According to Child Welfare Authorities, reported child abuse in Japan has been increasing. With the 12 months between March 2013 and March 2014 having 89,000 reported cases of child abuse. Osaka had the most at 13,738, followed by Kanagawa with 10,190, and then Tokyo with 7,814. Previously we had discussed suicide and how Osaka had the lowest suicide to number of residents ratio because of the typical personality or disposition of Osaka's residents, but this paints another picture of people in Osaka.

Why do you think there were so many reported cases of child abuse in Osaka? Why do you think child abuse in Japan has been increasing?

Does it tie into any kind of Japanese traditional thought processes?

What can be done to change this kind of abuse in Japan?

Let's talk about that.

- Too expensive.

I waited for the shop assistant to answer, and he said "That t-shirt costs ¥50,000" I was shocked! I had to repeat "¥50,000! That's very very very very expensive!!!" He looked confused and replied "That's right, but this was Michael Jackson's t-shirt" .

I was shocked, so I said to the shop assistant "I can't afford that, and I don't really like Michael Jackson" He looked a little confused, and realised his mistake, "I'm sorry, I will get a new one!" he said while running off into the back of the shop. I decided to look around the shop by myself while I waited for him to come back.

I found a cheap green t-shirt so I took the t-shirt and placed it in my shopping-basket. I started walking towards the register so I could buy the t-shirt. "What do you think about this t-shirt?" I heard from behind me. The shop assistant had returned with another t-shirt, so I told him "Thank you, but I have already found a t-shirt that I like", he nodded and walked back to the back of the shop.

After he left, I placed my shopping basket on the counter and the counter-staff took the green t-shirt out of the shopping-basket, scanned it's barcode and read the price out to me "¥108 please" I paid using a ¥1000 note so she gave me ¥882 in change back, and then she handed me the receipt.

"Thank you, please come again" she said while handing me a plastic bag with my new t-shirt in it. I started walking home and while I was walking; I thought about some recent events. So I decided to write about some of those events in my diary when I got home.
