隠れん語 〜Baby animals〜

前回・前々回の隠れん語WINNERさんです!

Congratulations!!

Lamb : Baby Sheep

Calf : Baby Cow

Joey : Baby Kangaroo

Foal : Baby Horse

Cub : Baby Bear

Chick : Baby Chicken

Kid : Baby Goat

Piglet : Baby Pig

Puppy : Baby Dog

Kitten : Baby Cat

Discussion Week 38 - Friday the 27th and Sunday the 30th of January

 - Discussion Week 38 -

- Friday the 27th of January

- What would you do...

If you were told today, that you had some incurable disease/or some other problem and you had only 1 week left to live, what would you do in that time?

How about if it was 1 month or 1 year?

For this discussion, the answers: "I would try to find a cure" or "I would spend a lot of money to invent a cure" etc. are forbidden. CURE IS IMPOSSIBLE in this discussion.

What do you think is the best plan of action for someone in that position?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 30th of January

 - Fake News -

Recently there seems to have been some kind of problem with "fake news" and for some reason people are having a hard time trying to distinguish what news is real and what is fake. As far as I understand, fake news has existed for a long time, even before the internet, in tabloids you could read about aliens kidnapping people and other crazy stuff.

Why do you think it's so difficult for people to understand the difference between real and fake news these days?

Do you think there is disproportionately more fake news these days than there was in the past?

Why are people not checking the facts before believing what they read?

Let's talk about that.

- Should prisons be humane

On Friday, I told you about the case of Mr. Breivik in Norway, who killed 69 people in Norway with a bomb and guns.

This man committed horrible crimes, and as such is in prison. However, recently he took the Norwegian government to court over his imprisonment being 'inhumane' as he was kept in solitary confinement and other parts of his treatment in prison (Click here for a wikipedia link to read about the case).

But my question to you all is;

Should prisons be humane?

Especially in the cases of extreme crimes such as the aforementioned Norwegian.

While I don't mean prisons should be torture and violence, my point is prison should be a punishment, and a horrible place to be. It should not be comfortable and happiness for those who have committed crimes.

If you think they should be more humane, why do you think that way?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 22nd of January

 - Nazi hunters -

So in WW2 there were some bad guys called Nazis. You probably knew that already though. At the end of WW2 the Nazis that were caught were either imprisoned or executed. However, a certain amount of Nazis managed to escape and fled to hiding places all over the world.

These days, there are people who are still dedicated to hunting down those who escaped and bringing them to justice.

While I understand that these people did terrible things, they were Nazis and were part of a horrible regime, but now we're in the year 2017, the war ended in 1945 and those Nazis that escaped may or may not still be alive, and if they are, they are probably in their late 90's (96+ years old).

Is it still worth the time, money and effort to put these old people (who are most likely not going to live much longer anyway), in jail for their crimes during WW2?

If you think it's still worth the time and effort, why do you think that?

Let's talk about that.

Discussion Week 36 - Friday the 13th and Sunday the 15th of January

 - Discussion Week 36 -

- Friday the 13th of January

- Pay it forward

Pay it forward is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor.

An example of this idea is "The mathematician Paul Erdős heard about a promising math student unable to enroll in Harvard University for financial reasons. Erdős contributed enough to allow the young man to register. Years later, the man offered to return the entire amount to Erdős, but Erdős insisted that the man rather find another student in his situation, and give the money to him"

What do you think about this idea, do you think it would work in Japan, and if not, why not?

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 15th of January

 - Overworking to death -

It seems that in Japan, there has been an issue lasting a long while that has to do with Japanese people working a lot of overtime. Through this a lot of people don't know which way to go with their lives, and either die from lack of good nutrition/sleep/essential needs, or commit suicide.

(For some inspiration on what to talk about in the class, please check this link: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2016/10/31/twitter-manga-shows-why-quit-your-job-isnt-such-an-easy-solution-for-suicidal-workers-in-japan/ )

Why does this happen?

Why don't people take a stand and change the way Japanese workplaces work?

Why do some people feel like death is the easier alternative to finding a new job?

Why is this more common in Japan than other countries?

Let's talk about that.

- SNS Stalking is now Illegal in Japan

Stalking in general has always been illegal when it reaches a certain level. Most times this is counter-acted by restraining orders, or in more extreme cases, by moving to a new house, getting a new phone number etc.

SNS stalking has been more difficult to police as being online allows users to have a certain level of anonymity.

Do you think online-stalking is, or has been a big problem in Japan?

What causes it to be a problem in Japan in the first place?

Is it really so bad now that a law is needed to prevent this?

( Here is a link to an article about the new law https://www.japantoday.com/category/crime/view/online-stalking-using-sns-becomes-illegal-in-japan )

Let's talk about that.

- Sunday the 8th of January

 - Is this the school's or the parent's fault? -

Please check out this link about something that happened in Japan recently:

https://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/family-sues-saitama-prefecture-after-daughter-dies-during-school-walkathon

This quote in particular is the focus of this discussion:

"The suit claims the high school failed to consider the students’ physical condition prior to the race and neglected to employ appropriate measures by failing to use an AED in time when the girl collapsed."

This implies that the girl's physical condition may not have been fit to partake in the walkathon to begin with. Should this not have been the parent's responsibility to ensure that their child was not doing an activity that was possibly too much for their physical capabilities?

Or is this the prefecture/school's fault for not ensuring that there were more medical supplies along walkathon in the case of an emergency?

Let's talk about that.
